Announcements from July 2003 to January 2004

July 9, 2003:   Four new artists

Introducing our opening list of artists: Miriam Lansdon, Robert McCaughin, Carol Heath Stabile, and Cliff Wood. It is appropriate that these are the first four artists to contribute to this site because they are the local artists I have known the longest and worked with the most. When I first conceived of this site, these four were at the top of my list of artist to approach. I couldn't imagine that any of them would say no, and lucky for all of us, none of them did. In addition to being talented artists, they all are very nice people. I am pleased and proud to be able share their work with the world.    -Andy

November 4, 2003:   Beloved local artist Robert McCaughin dies at age 83

We are saddened to announce that one of our "founding" artists, Robert McCaughin died October 2, 2003 at his home in Port Ludlow, Washington of a brain tumor. Bob was one of the four original artists who were part of this site from its beginning in July, 2003.Bob was optimistic and enthusiastic about this project from the first time I contacted him to the last. I met with him at his home just a month before his death. He was in the middle of radiation treatments, had lost all of his beautiful white hair, and in even though his doctors were offering an optimistic prognosis, I knew this must have been a frightening time for him and his family. Yet even in this situation, it was Bob who was offering encouragement to me! When my enthusiasm for this project had reached a low ebb and I was considering giving up, Bob had enough enthusiasm and optimism for the both of us. Cancer, schmancer...he had me take paintings from his living room wall, let me rummage his studio for others, and told me how excited he was to be painting new pieces for this web site. It was his inspiration that kept me going and continues to encourage me still. With his quiet, gentlemanly demeanor and thoughtful support, Bob brought out the best in all of us. He enlivened all he met with his welcoming smile, keen mind, sense of humor, and his sincere, genuine interest in them. He was much respected, much loved and will be greatly missed.

November 4, 2003:   New artist - Don Tiller

December 30, 2003:   New artist - Justeen Brown

Introducing new artist Justeen Brown. A fresh face, fresh from Art school in Boston, sharing some fresh new art; Justeen is the first young artist to contribute to this site (although many of our artists are "among the very young at heart.") Her set includes a variety of subjects, including our first animals.

January 6, 2004:   New artist - Cindy Mangutz

Introducing new artist Cindy Mangutz. Cindy's unique and heart-warming style of primitive folk art, depicting familiar Northwest scenes as we might imagine them in an earlier age, has earned her many devoted fans throughout the region. We are thrilled to be sharing two groups of her works; one featuring familiar Puget Sound images, and the other featuring our first set of Christmas images. (No, they're not late, we're just getting an early start for next year.)

January 14, 2004:   New works by Cliff Wood

Charter member, Cliff Wood, shares six new pieces for our collection. The new works include several scenic landscapes as well as another one of Port Townsend's historic buildings, the Post Office. While Cliff is well known for his watercolors, this new set includes his work in pastels for the first time here.
